In the blistering sunshine, Scouts played four games without conceding any tries and came away victors in the Plate Final. All the games proved to be very tough to which Scouts raised their game to play probably their best rugby of the season. In Game 1 against West Bridgeford Reds, this finished 0-0 however Scouts came close to scoring on several occasions but could not get the try they so richly deserved for their efforts. In Game 2 against West Bridgeford Blacks, Scouts came away with a good 40-0 win. Once again Scouts took immediate control of the game, however on this occasion they were able to get points on the board at regular intervals. In Game 3, they faced the tournament hosts Holt and whilst this also finished 0-0, as with the first game, Scouts enjoyed a vast majority of the possession but could not infiltrate the stern defence. Scouts finished third in the league of seven teams, only ½ point behind the second placed team, so just missed out on the main final, but qualified for the Plate Final, in which they faced a very strong and aggressive side in Thurrock. Once again Scouts immediately took the game to the opposition and were rewarded with an early converted try giving them a half time lead of 7-0. Through the second half, the Scouts defence was tested by Thurrock, but held strong with excellent team work and every player making their tackles and applying maximum commitment to hold on to a well deserved win. The attitude of the entire squad throughout the weekend was exemplary, a fantastic time was had by all, both on and off the rugby pitch. Next weekend, Scouts finish the season with their own Don White Festival. Saints Tournament – 13th February 2010
Squad Christian Barry, Samuel Buckley, Reece Bush, Aaron Campbell, Oliver Cherry, Harry Demidiuk, James Dodd, Thomas Holliday, Connor Humphrey, Lucy Hynes, Callum Inwood, Jay Partridge, Tom Pearce, Adam Price, Harry Smith and Oliver Stacey Report Old Scouts U11s took part in the annual Saints Festival and whilst they did not qualify for the semi-final knock out stages, they played excellent running rugby in all three of their pool games. Game 1 saw them up against Rushden and Higham, with the scoreline not reflecting the game itself, as Scouts went down one try to nil, having had all the play and controlled the game in all areas. A fast pace was set by the Scouts forwards who dominated the early exchanges, with good rucking and handling, providing quick ball for the back line. Scouts passing was superb with the ball being distributed through the line very well, however they simply could not turn all the pressure into points, owing to stern last gasp tackling from Rushden. All their efforts were undone by a late breakaway try, in which Scouts immediately went back on the attack, but simply ran out of time. Scouts entered game 2 with the same attitude, taking the game to Bedford and were rewarded with two quick tries from Callum Inwood and Ollie Cherry, following excellent handling in open play. Bedford not wanting to give up, took the game back to Scouts, however owing to strong determined defence, Scouts absorbed their pressure and went back on the attack with Callum Inwood completing his hat-trick with a further two tries, giving a solid four tries to nil win for the squad. Game 3 was a must win for Scouts to give them a chance of reaching the semi-finals, however facing a strong side in Diss, they avoided defeat with a well deserved draw. From kick off Diss ran hard and fast at Scouts, and were rewarded with a try in the corner after only a couple of minutes. Scouts showed excellent composure and rallied round with a true fightback, earning themselves a pushover try with just three minutes left from Callum Inwood. Then receiving the restart Scouts threw everything into the final minutes, but just could not get through a strong Diss defence, whom went on to reach the final, finishing runners up. The whole squad played their part in an excellent mornings rugby , to which they can all be very proud of themselves. Game 1 Lost 0 – 1 No Scorers Game 2 Won 4 – 0 Callum Inwood 3, Oliver Cherry Game 3 Drew 1 - 1 Callum Inwood BEDFORD – 24 JANUARY 2010 Squad Christian Barry, Samuel Buckley, Reece Bush, Aaron Campbell, Harry Demidiuk, James Dodd, Thomas Holliday, Connor Humphrey, Callum Inwood, Jay Partridge, Tom Pearce, Alex Shepherd, Harry Smith, Jarrod van de Westhuizen Report After six weeks without any rugby, Old Scouts U11s travelled to Bedford full of excitement to get back onto the pitch for what they knew would be a tough encounter. Bedford A have always proved to be a strong team and this was certainly the case in the first game where they ran out victors seven tries to nil. Although the score line was very much in favour to Bedford, they didn’t have it all their own way, as Scouts never gave in and produced stern defence in many areas. After conceding two early tries Scouts then fought back with determination up front from Harry Smith and Samuel Buckley, securing ball for the backs to move forward. Scouts were always attacking under pressure and on a couple of occasions got close to the Bedford line, but were unable to come away with any reward. Whilst game 1 proved to be a stern test for Scouts, they re-grouped themselves to face Bedford B in game 2 and came away with a draw, being unfortunate not to have achieved the victory, owing to a very late try from the hosts. Christian Barry picked up a couple of tries for his efforts and Callum Inwood also dotted down following a long run. Scouts had more balance in this second game, building phases of play around the pitch, with good handling in muddy conditions. Aaron Campbell played his part both in the forwards and the backs, and it was great to have Harry Demidiuk back on the pitch after a lengthy injury. With many areas of the game to work on, in all it was a good morning’s rugby, as finally the squad were able to get back together to allow the season to continue. Scouts came out on top in the first game, by a single try to nil, in a tough nail biting game. In the early exchanges Scouts played some good attacking rugby and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions, albeit for the strong Huntingdon defence. Scouts forwards won their fair share of the ball giving a good platform to the backs, allowing the ball to be moved well with some slick moves and good handling, from Thomas Holliday, Callum Inwood and Christian Barry. In the later stages of the first half Inwood forced his way through for the only score of the game. Huntingdon attacked well in the second half, but Scout’s determined defence kept them out. The second game was a completely different story, with Scouts losing their shape and conceding seven unanswered tries in total. With a small squad of players, as well as losing Samuel Buckley with a broken finger, Scouts could not answer the tough running of Huntingdon. Scouts played well in patches but were unable to compete against a strong Huntingdon side fielding several new fresh players and the depleted Scouts squad simply ran out of energy. Both games were played in good spirit from both teams. Game 1 Won 7 - 0 Callum Inwood 1T, Thomas Holliday 1C Game 2 Lost 0 - 49 Bletchley – 22 November 2009 Squad Christian Barry, Samuel Buckley, Reece Bush, Aaron Campbell, James Dodd, Thomas Holliday, Connor Humphrey, Ethan Ingram, Callum Inwood, Jay Partridge, Tom Pearce, Adam Price, Alex Shepherd and Harry Smith Report Scouts U11s played their first home game of the season against Bletchley, in atrocious weather, of heavy wind and rain, and came away convincing victors in both games. The awful conditions didn’t hamper the spirit from both teams as both squads played excellent rugby. Scouts had worked hard for the past couple of weeks in training, particularly concentrating on handling and this proved to be a big part of their improvement as handling errors were minimal in the conditions. All players played really well throughout both games and it would be unfair to single out individual performances, however Reece Bush played his best rugby yet, solid in defence, strong ripping of the ball in contact and good running in open space. Christian Barry helped himself to 3 tries and 9 conversions over the two games, with other tries coming from Thomas Holliday, Connor Humphrey, Ethan Ingram and Callum Inwood. With Scouts forwards working hard in all areas, this allowed the Scouts back line to execute moves in open space, in which the ball was distributed very well both in and before contact. It is fair to suggest that Scouts played their best rugby of the season so far and if they continue to apply the same attitude in all areas of the game then they will continue to improve and get stronger as the season continues. Well done to all involved. Game 1 Won 33 - 0 Christian Barry 2T 4C, Thomas Holliday 1T, Ethan Ingram 1T, Callum Inwood 1T Game 2 Won 35 - 0 Callum Inwood 2T, Connor Humphrey 1T, Thomas Holliday 1T, Christian Barry 1T 5C Casuals / Daventry – 1 November 2009 Squad Christian Barry, Samuel Buckley, Reece Bush, Aaron Campbell, Oliver Cherry, Harry Demidiuk, James Dodd, Thomas Holliday, Connor Humphrey, Ethan Ingram, Callum Inwood, Ryan Nicklin, Jay Partridge, Tom Pearce, Alex Shepherd, Harry Smith, Oliver Stacey, Peter Ward and Jarrod van der Westhuizen. Report Scouts U11s endured mixed feelings from this weekend’s matches, reaching both highs and lows in general conduct. Scouts first game verses Daventry was played in the true spirit of the game, with Daventry just coming out on top two tries to one. Scouts played all the rugby in the first half, attacking and moving the ball very well, with excellent handling in the backs. Samuel Buckley and Harry Smith once again put in strong performances up front, keeping the pressure on a solid Daventry pack. Christian Barry had lots of clean ball from the rucks and distributed it very well down the line. Scouts could easily have had two or three scores were it not for some tough defending and good tackling by Daventry. Finally, just before half time, centre Harry Demidiuk crashed over for a well-deserved try, giving Scouts the lead. Scouts lead was short lived owing to a slight lapse of concentration allowed Daventry to level the scores just after the interval. Then for the remainder of the game Scouts constantly applied pressure onto Daventry but just could not get through, then only for Daventry to steal the win in the dying moments of the game, which could easily have finished a draw. An excellent game played in good spirit by both teams, to which welcomed compliments were given by the Daventry coaches for how well Scouts moved the ball and played together. Then game two saw a difference in gamesmanship and regrettably against Casuals the game itself, proved not to be an advert for mini rugby, with many tough challenges and questionable decisions the game ended in confrontation between both sets of squads. Scouts went down 2-1 with Oliver Cherry picking up the Scouts try. Scouts have worked very hard on the aspects of handling under pressure and using the space, and in the terrible wet conditions, applied these skills very well indeed and showed their ability to play as a team. Game 1 v Daventry Lost 1 – 2 Harry Demidiuk Game 2 v Casuals Lost 1 – 2 Oliver Cherry Bedford Blues Festival - 4th October 2009 Squad Christian Barry, Samuel Buckley, Aaron Campbell, Oliver Cherry, Harry Demidiuk, Thomas Holliday, Connor Humphrey, Ethan Ingram, Callum Inwood, Ryan Nicklin, Jay Partridge, Adam Price, Alex Shepherd, Harry Smith, Oliver Stacey. Report Scouts U11s played in the annual Bedford Blues Festival and were rewarded following an excellent day’s rugby as they were winners of the plate competition, after finishing in second place in the pool behind a very good Bedford Blues A team. In their first game, Scouts met tough opposition in Old Albanians A, however with their defence remaining strong they did not let OAs through and maintaining pressure on them thus resulting in OAs making mistakes, allowing Scouts to capitalise on the errors. Early in the second half, Harry Smith, who played outstandingly throughout the day, spotted the gap in OAs defence to drive over the line, following good pressure from the forwards. Then late in the game Alex Shepherd dived onto a loose ball to touch down to put the game out of sight. Both tries were converted by Christian Barry. Game two, was a different story as Scouts came up a very strong and well drilled Blues A side, and were on the receiving end of five converted tries to nil. Scouts started the game with determination and in places had Blues A on the back foot, but unfortunately could convert the pressure into points. Then a tired Scouts team, who had not had a break between the matches went behind by two tries, late in the first half. Although Scouts took the game once again to Bedford, they simply could not find a way through the solid defence and were under pressure by the pace in their attack. At last with a break behind them, Scouts went ahead early in game three against Towcester with Alex Shepherd burrowing his way out of a maul and driving over from close range. This early try proved to be the only score in this game, although Scouts came close with strong performances up front from Samuel Buckley, Conner Humphrey, Jay Partridge and Aaron Campbell. The try was converted by Callum Inwood. Having finished second in the pool, Scouts went through to the Plate Final against Blues B, coming out as convincing winners with three converted tries to nil. Harry Demidiuk broke the Bedford defence, but was held up short of the line, however, Callum Inwood, who was close in support, picked up and drove over to score the first try of the game. Callum Inwood went on to score a second try with Thomas Holliday providing the third in the last minutes of the game. The tries were converted by Adam Price and Thomas Holliday (2) The attitude of the whole squad was superb throughout the day and the trophy was well deserved. Game 1 v Old Albanians A Won 14 – 0 Harry Smith (Try), Alex Shepherd (Try), Christian Barry (2 Cons) Game 2 v Bedford Blues A Lost 0 – 35 Game 3 v Towcestrians Won 7 – 0 Alex Shepherd (Try), Callum Inwood (Con) Plate Final v Bedford Blues B Won 21 – 0 Callum Inwood (2 Tries), Thomas Holliday (1 Try, 2 Cons), Adam Price (Con) Wellingborough – 27 September 2009 Squad Christian Barry, Samuel Buckley, Aaron Campbell, Harry Demidiuk, James Dodd, Thomas Holliday, Connor Humphrey, Ethan Ingram, Callum Inwood, Jay Partridge, Tom Pearce, Adam Price, Alex Shepherd, Harry Smith, Peter Ward and Jarrod van der Westhuizen. Report Scouts U11s got their new season underway with a tough opening fixture away to Wellingborough and came away with three draws, with all matches being closely fought and contested, with great open play from both teams. Scouts started the first game by attacking immediately from kick off and had Wellingborough on the back foot for the majority of the opening minutes. Gradually, Wellingborough got themselves together and started to attack, however with Scouts strong defence not giving way, a well earned draw was the end result. The second game started with much of the same from Scouts and after five minutes were awarded their first try of the season from new signing Harry Demidiuk, scoring in the corner against his old club, following excellent phases of passing in open play from the Scouts back line. Shortly afterwards Wellingborough forced their way back into the game with a try from their forwards, driven over from close range. Scouts continued to attack, but regrettably, could not break down the strong Wellingborough defence. This game then finished 1-1. The final game saw Scouts on the back foot as Wellingborough, with a larger squad, brought on fresh players who threw everything at Scouts. However the exhausted Scouts players held strong in defence and kept out Wellingborough in the heat. Throughout the three games, excellent tactical kicking in defence from both Jarrod van der Westhuizen and Christian Barry ensured Scouts cleared their lines to reduce the pressure from Wellingborough, together with Harry Demidiuk making an excellent debut with sound tackling and strong running in attack. Samuel Buckley also had a good start to the season with a strong powerful performance up front. A great start to the season from all the squad who next week, travel to Bedford Blues for their annual festival. Game 1 Drew 0 – 0 Game 2 Drew 1 – 1 Harry Demidiuk Game 3 Drew 0 – 0
